Julia Katherine Walsh sings Amy Beach’s “The Year’s at the Spring”

I was born in Osaka, Japan. I began piano and composition studies at the age of 7. I received my A.A. degree in composition at Kobe Yamate Women’s College, where I studied with composer Yoshinao Nakada. After graduation, I became a Yamaha Music Education System instructor and a Cocktail Pianist. Several years later I decided to come to US to pursue musical career in US.I was originally majoring in composition at Queen College; but I switched  my focus to Piano Performance. I have studied with Julie Jordan, Liz Huang, Gary Hammond, and  Madeline Bruser. I received my Bachelor of Music and Master of Art degree from Hunter College, New York. During my academic study there, I won the Aria and Concerto Competition in 2008,  received numerous awards and prizes, had opportunities in accompanying Hunter Choir and tutoring  music theory to students. After graduating from Hunter, I became a freelance accompanist and continue teaching piano privately. I had been a staff accompanist at Hunter College, where I accompanied the voice studio of Susan Gonzaleez, Maria Argyros and Elise Quagliata. I also have accompanied Hunter College Choir, Chamber Singers, Voice Class for non-voice major, and Art Song Class.

I was the Music Director at the Japanese America United Church in New York City, where I taught the choir and expanded my knowledge of liturgical music.  Currently I am serving as a substitute organist throughout the New York Metropolitan area. In 2010, I served as the Musical Director for the Mendel Songs Concert Project and performed at the Hebrew tabernacle in Washington Heights, New York. From 2013-2015, I served as a staff accompanist at the Gelsey Kirkland Academy of Classical Ballet in New York City.

Starting the summer 2013, my musical life has become more geared towards the Operatic field. I served as the Personal Assistant to the conductor, Cesare Civetta, the founder of the Beethoven Music Festival, a non-profit organization, for 2 years. I learned a lot about operatic repertoire from maestro Civetta. I have been appeared as an intern pianist for North Shore Summer Music Festival in Long Island, Nico Castero’s New York Opera Advantage, the Opera Company of Brooklyn, Opera Pomme Rouge, Hunter Opera and Joan Dornermann’s International Vocal Arts Institute. In 2016, I joined Sing For Hope as a volunteer artist.  I have been performing as a collaborative pianist throughout New York City. I am currently a faculty member at Turtle Bay Music School and a staff accompanist at Hunter College.
